Industrial Threat Overview

Honeywell Process Solutions, in coordination with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), has issued a high-severity industrial cybersecurity advisory regarding a critical flaw (CVE-2026-79110, CVSS 9.4) in its MasterLogic-200 (ML200) programmable logic controller family. MasterLogic PLCs are deployed globally across water treatment plants, power generation auxiliary systems, district heating networks, and discrete industrial packaging operations.

The defect enables an unauthenticated attacker positioned on the supervisory industrial network to send crafted TCP communication packets to the PLC's dedicated Ethernet communication module (2SL0-ECOM), triggering an internal buffer overflow that crashes the communications coprocessor or executes arbitrary code within the main CPU's program memory space.

Protocol Root Cause & Handshake Overflow (CWE-120 / CWE-284)

The MasterLogic ML200 relies on 2SL0-ECOM modules to facilitate engineering workstation access via Honeywell's SoftMaster programming suite and supervisory communication with Experion PKS SCADA systems over proprietary TCP port 8000.

During the session negotiation phase, the module parser allocates an internal 512-byte stack buffer to decode station identification and diagnostic commands. However, the protocol parser fails to verify the length header of incoming parameter blocks before invoking a memory copy operation. An attacker can craft a single TCP payload containing a 1024-byte malformed station descriptor that completely overwrites the stack frame return pointer:

Hardware Module Vulnerable Firmware Remediated Release
2SL0-ECOM (Ethernet 10/100 Module) Firmware versions prior to v4.22 Upgrade to v4.22 or later
2SL0-ECOM/B (Dual-Port Ethernet) Firmware versions prior to v2.15 Upgrade to v2.15 or later
ML200 CPU (2KM0-CPUA / CPUB) OS Runtime prior to v5.10 Apply Security Patch 5.10-SP1

Operational Impact: Control Loop Interruption & Equipment Damage

Successful exploitation forces the PLC into an unrecoverable fault state, disconnecting all remote I/O chassis from the central processor. In critical water pumping or heating systems, an abrupt controller freeze can cause pressure surges (water hammer), thermal runaway, or unplanned emergency valve shutdowns.

IEC 62443 Remediation Directives

Plant operators and OT security engineers should enforce the following controls in accordance with IEC 62443-3-3 System Security Requirements:

  1. Firmware Flash Update: Upgrade all 2SL0-ECOM modules to firmware v4.22 using the SoftMaster utility during scheduled maintenance windows.
  2. TCP Port Filtering: Restrict TCP port 8000 at industrial switch boundaries so that only authenticated, static MAC/IP engineering workstations can communicate with PLC modules.
  3. Network Segmentation (IEC 62443-3-2): Isolate Level 1 controller field networks from Level 2 supervisory networks and corporate IT, ensuring no direct Internet ingress exists.
